Leave of Absence

The leader of LOA at a 12k+ employee org thought she needed a training. What she really needed was a total UX and communication overhaul.

The Leave of Absence team was overwhelmed by inquiries from team members requesting help with the LOA process. Despite tons of instructional content on their SharePoint page, people still didn't know what to do. The head of LOA decided a training was needed for folks navigating the process.

After a discovery call and evaluation of their goals and current assets, it became clear a training was absolutely not the solution (and would have made things worse). The LOA site was a jumbled haystack of random information, organized in a way that did not make sense to those needing guidance. Emails and checklists were similarly disorganized and unclear. In an effort to be helpful, the LOA team had created many layers of explanation that had led to even more calls for help, not less.

The Solution

My recommendation was to completely redesign the LOA experience to lead team members through the 'story' of their LOA process. This consisted of an initial warm and friendly email that gave an overview (not minute details) of the complex process, a guided checklist with digestible action points, and a way to get help if needed.

This led them to the Sharepoint site, which is centered around a 'spine' of universalprocess information needed, in the proper order, on their journey. From this spine, they can link to other relevant forms or information for their particular situation, which then will link back to the spine in all the right places to continue the story without disorientation.

To explain this, I prepared a presentation to help the team grasp the plan.
They were on board, but the UX and information overhaul was very extensive and complicated, and beyond the skill set and time available for the LOA team. So I created the initial email, essential checklist, infographics, content design, and old & new UX maps of their site.

The implementation would be up to them, so I created tutorial videos to explain what I did and why, and gave specifics on how to implement.

Tangibles

every little seed Publication

An entrepreneur with a beautiful product was struggling to break even. Her messaging and marketing were the key to increasing sales.

The every little seed publication was struggling. After meeting with the founder and understanding goals, it appeared the messaging wasn't speaking clearly or directly enough to her ideal customer. The efforts being made towards content, product placement, and offer creation were missing the mark in today's market. Presentation of public-facing content and assets was suboptimal and the company was using outdated approaches.

The Solution

My recommendation was two-fold: First, many things regarding messaging, content, and offer creation needed to change.

And second - but just as important - The founder needed to stop trying to chase multiple ventures and focus on just one: the publication.

I explained an overview of the basics of these changes, and introduced her to a platform that would streamline her efforts and save on cost (GoHighLevel) that would replace many scattered tools she was using.

For deeper specifics, I audited all public-facing content offerings as a start, and gave written recommendations. This founder worked best with this approach, and preferred smaller steps. So we began with a mini-audit and some time for implementation before moving on to other elements.

PIA's Mentoring Program

The director of the Process Improvement Academy had an ineffective mentoring program for Green Belt students. Challenging the structure as a whole and rebuilding was the answer.

The PIA works within an enterprise org to train employees for their Green Belt certifications. This includes a crucial mentorship from someone who is already certified. But students were confused and not following guidelines due to poor mentorship. After speaking with the PI team's leader, it turned out the program had insufficient structure and tools and was being carried out by those who were not well-suited for the task.

The Solution

After multiple sessions, I recommended a complete restructure of the program itself, requiring only those with interest, capacity, and capability to become mentors and teachers after being certified. We developed solutions to the shortage of mentors (which was why everyone was required to become one in the first place), and I advised on the nuts and bolts of a training program alonsgside a new 'mentorship program and pathway'. Tools, checklists, job aids, and tutorials would be woven into the program from the beginning, and evaluations would be robust and consistent to continue to inform improvements.

Tangibles

- New 'Mentorship Program and Pathway' design
- Coordinating Mentor and Mentee Checklists
- Post-Certification Meeting and Evaluation for Potential Mentors
- Structured Check-Ins and Student Milestone Criteria
- Student and Mentor Evaluations

Monarch Counseling Services

An established therapist wants to expand services and create a cohesive brand.

Monarch Counseling added Neurofeedback Services and rented a large space, hoping to create a developed brand and get the name out into the community. There wasn't a basic plan for early business development and structure.

Solution

I got to know what the therapist's goals were for the company, audited what was already present, and created an overview and timeline for what actions needed to be taken and when in order to grow the business. I also created the branding, ICP, voice, and visuals.
